GEO vs SEO: the difference, and why both matter

SEO optimizes your position in classic search results (Google, Bing); GEO optimizes your odds of being cited by name inside an AI-generated answer (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini). The two overlap heavily but aren't measured the same way, and aren't won with exactly the same levers.
What they share
Both need a properly indexed, crawlable site, factual and current content, and some form of perceived authority — backlinks and mentions on the SEO side, mentions and presence in trusted third-party sources on the GEO side. A site invisible to Google has very little chance of being read and cited by an AI: SEO remains the base layer GEO builds on.
What sets them apart
- Goal: SEO targets a position (ideally top 3) in a list; GEO targets a spot among the handful of names an AI chooses to cite explicitly.
- Outcome for the user: SEO leads to a click through to your site; GEO often leads to a citation read directly inside the answer, with no click at all.
- What gets judged: SEO looks at ranking signals (links, technical structure, relevance); GEO looks at how factually readable content is and what third-party sources say about your reputation.
- Measurement: SEO is tracked with a rank and traffic; GEO is tracked by asking the questions and watching who gets cited — there is no universal numeric position.
Why SEO alone isn't enough anymore
Ranking first on Google no longer guarantees being cited by an AI: a model answering a question directly often reads only a handful of sources and names even fewer of them. An excellent SEO ranking can coexist with total absence from AI answers on the exact same queries.
Why GEO alone isn't enough either
Without an indexed, crawlable, well-structured site, an AI simply has nothing to read in order to cite you. SEO fundamentals — indexing, structure, factual content — remain the foundation GEO is built on, not an alternative it replaces.
How to prioritize
- Site already well indexed, solid SEO content → invest in GEO: structure your pages as direct answers, strengthen your presence in third-party comparisons and reviews.
- Site barely or not indexed → start with SEO fundamentals (indexing, technical structure, base content) before expecting an AI to cite you.
- Either way → measure both separately: a Google ranking says nothing about your presence inside AI answers, and vice versa.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to choose between SEO and GEO?
No — they're two complementary measures of the same online visibility, not competing strategies. Clear, factual, well-structured content generally serves both at once.
Will GEO replace SEO?
Unlikely in the short term: classic search and AI answer engines coexist, and many queries (transactional, local, comparative) still go through classic search.
How do I know which one to work on first?
Check your Google ranking on your key queries AND ask AI tools the same questions. If you rank well but are never cited by AI, that's a clear signal to prioritize GEO.
