What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the set of practices that help a brand get cited, named or recommended inside answers generated by AI — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude — rather than only ranked in traditional search results.
Why GEO exists
A growing share of lookups now happen through conversational assistants instead of a classic search bar. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best [product/service] for [need]", the AI doesn't hand back ten blue links to sort through — it directly picks a handful of names to mention, based on what it has read: its training data, and for web-connected models, a live search. Being one of those cited names is what GEO aims for.
How it differs from classic SEO
SEO optimizes for a ranking algorithm and a click: getting well positioned in a list of results. GEO optimizes for a model that reads, synthesizes and rephrases: being one of the sources it keeps and cites, often with no click following at all. Both share a common base — clear, factual content that actually answers the question — but the specific levers differ: answer structure, presence in third-party sources AI engines consult, and how information is marked up matter more in GEO than in plain SEO.
How an AI engine picks who to cite
Two mechanics coexist. First, training data: what the model read and memorized before it shipped. Second, for browsing-enabled tools (ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Gemini), a live web search at the moment of the question, followed by reading several sources that the model synthesizes into one answer — usually naming only a few of them.
Being cited therefore depends on two things: existing in what the model already learned, and — for real-time answers — showing up among the sources its web search returns and trusts. That's why online reputation (reviews, independent comparisons, mentions in trade press) weighs as much as the content of your own site.
How to get started with GEO
- Check whether AI already cites you: ask it yourself the questions your prospective customers would ask.
- Structure your content as direct answers and FAQs, rather than long marketing copy.
- Strengthen your presence in the third-party comparisons and reviews AI engines consult — not just your own site.
- Check back regularly: AI answers shift with every model update.
Frequently asked questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. The two overlap heavily — both need clear, structured, authoritative content — but they measure different things: ranking in Google results versus presence inside AI answers. See the GEO vs SEO article for the detail.
Can I find out if AI already cites me?
Yes — by asking AI tools directly the questions your customers would ask, or with a tool like SharkGeo that automates the check and compares it against your competitors.
Is GEO only about ChatGPT?
No — GEO covers every AI answer engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot…), each with its own sources and citation biases.
